ROAD POLICING officers in Fife last week undertook a national day of action in deterring and detecting those dealing illegally in scrap metal.
Chief Inspector David McCulloch, Head of Road Policing said: “ Fife Constabulary were delighted to work closely with our partners at SEPA (Scottish Environmental Protection Agency) and VOSA (Vehicle and Operator Services Agency). This was a national day of action across the whole of the UK designed around providing advice to those involved in dealing with scrap and detecting offences where they were committed.
“The recent high value of scrap metals has led to an increased number of thefts across the whole of the UK. Officers worked throughout the day stopping suspect vehicles in Kirkcaldy, East Wemyss and Glenrothes. One driver was found to be dealing in scrap without a licence and was also using his vehicle for business purposes without the necessary insurance cover to do so. I would ask that if anybody has information regarding scrap metal thefts to call us on 0845 600 5702 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where all calls are treated anonymously.”
Judith Moore, SEPA’s unit manager for Fife, said: “We welcome the opportunity to work with external organisations, including Fife Constabulary and VOSA, to identify and target potential environmental crime.
